Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry recommends the application of fluoride varnish to prevent sensitivity after a dental cleaning, to help fight any cavity causing bacteria left in the mouth and to help re-mineralize areas that may have the beginning signs of decay.
The frequency of fluoride application is dependent on the cavity risk of your child. We recommend your child receives two fluoride treatments per year to minimize the risk of cavities and keep tooth enamel strong.
Though fluoride is found in many food and water sources, that alone may not be enough to prevent cavities or tooth decay. Fluoride treatments involve a highly concentrated varnish that is applied to your child's teeth.
The treatment has much more fluoride than what's in your toothpaste and only takes a few minutes to apply. After application, the fluoride should remain on your child's teeth for one minute, and not rinsed away for at least thirty minutes. Your child's tooth enamel will be strengthened and their teeth will be more resistant to cavities.
Another preventative treatment you may have heard of are dental sealants. The difference between fluoride and sealants are that sealants are a material applied to the molars and premolars, protecting the deep ridges and grooves from food or bacteria getting in.
Fluoride is a natural mineral absorbed by the teeth that serves to strengthen the tooth enamel and prevent decay. Both dental sealants and fluoride are beneficial in protecting your child's teeth long term.
